Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select or modify a pattern and perform cutting of one-off single lays to meet design requirements and individual client needs. It includes assessing body characteristics, taking body measurements and interpreting those measurements to inform cutting requirements. The degree of complexity may vary depending on characteristics of the fabrics being used and intricacy of design. Measuring and laying up tasks may be associated with operations where size, shape and cost of fabric are significant.This unit applies to individuals who use discretion and judgement in planning and selecting patternmaking and garment production processes to achieve outcomes.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to cut custom-made garments
- 1.1 Obtain relevant client body measurements and assess client body characteristics
- 1.2 Interpret garment measurements to suit special body characteristics of client
- 1.3 Consult client to confirm design and pattern requirements
- 1.4 Determine preferred fabric and incorporate special needs of the client into the design, where required
- 1.5 Modify pattern to meet client requirements
2. Lay up and cut material
- 2.1 Check material for quality, faults, width, selvedges, dye lot and marking requirements
- 2.2 Place pattern pieces economically on material ready to cut and check alignment to ensure specifications are met
- 2.3 Cut material to meet design requirements and pattern measurements
- 2.4 Prepare documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
