Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct a systematic risk assessment of a work area in which flooring materials will be or are being installed, to establish and maintain a safe work environment throughout the installation.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

1. Identify and interpret operational and environmental information
  • 1.1 Interpret job instructions to identify work requirements
  • 1.2 Identify all required tools, how to operate them and the safety implications of doing so
  • 1.3 Identify materials required by the job instructions and the safety implications of handling and installing them
2. Identify hazards
  • 2.1 Read manufacturer instructions for materials handled and identify potential hazards
  • 2.2 Identify and analyse the work area and potential hazards in it
  • 2.3 Access and analyse information about safety systems and identify hazards adequately mitigated by workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Recognise and record mitigated hazards and their likely impacts according to workplace procedures
3. Assess risks
  • 3.1 Accurately estimate the likelihood the hazard will cause harm
  • 3.2 Determine the consequences of the harm occurring
  • 3.3 Determine the level of risk, based on the identified likelihood and consequences
4. Identify and decide on risk treatments
  • 4.1 Identify and assess options to eliminate or minimise the risk
  • 4.2 Identify options that are feasible in the work area for the work task
  • 4.3 Choose the most appropriate treatment for the work area and task
5. Implement risk treatments
  • 5.1 Prepare a plan for the chosen treatment that includes actions, responsibilities and required resources
  • 5.2 Organise required resources according to workplace procedures
  • 5.3 Implement the risk treatment according to the plan and workplace procedures
  • 5.4 Explain the risk treatment outcomes to the relevant people
