Description
DescriptorThis unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to select suitable cadaveric donors for bone, eye, skin and heart valve tissues and notifying the donor co-ordinator for transplantation of research

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Assess suitability for donation
- 1.1 Determine general suitability using regular tissue selection criteria
- 1.2 Check donor's recent health history and medications to determine donor suitability
- 1.3 Compare information provided through autopsy with existing records and identify discrepancies
- 1.4 Determine age and weight limits meet donor selection criteria
- 1.5 Determine that tissue meets donor selection criteria
- 1.6 Check for any tissue abnormality
- 1.7 Where information is obtained which indicates that the donor may be unsuitable, seek further guidance is explained clearly and sensitively and accurate information is passed on to the appropriate person
2. Determine donor willingness/ability to donate
- 2.1 Establish donor's consent for donation and purpose of donation
- 2.2 Explain the donation process accurately to relevant other/s in a manner that meets needs
- 2.3 Determine relevant other/s understanding of the process
- 2.4 Explain timeframes
- 2.5 Obtain consent from relevant other/s where necessary
- 2.6 Document decisions
3. Remove donated tissue
- 3.1 Undertake removal of donated tissue in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and OHS requirements
- 3.2 Store donated tissue in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and OHS requirements
- 3.3 Notify donor co-ordinator of donation and availability of tissue
- 3.4 Arrange for transportation of tissue and/or long term storage in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and OHS requirements
4. Document outcomes
- 4.1 Enter relevant information clearly and accurately into the donor record
- 4.2 Ensure all actions are document in accordance with organisation policies and procedures
- 4.3 Maintain records in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and OHS requirements
- 4.4 Maintain the confidentiality of the donor
