Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to position blades in jigs or vices, produce bevels along the back clearance angles of teeth, check blade clearance requirements and set teeth to site requirements. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting.The unit applies to Sawdoctor, Saw Repairer, Sawyer.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for filing and saw setting
  • 1.1 Review work order and, where required, check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • 1.3 Plan setting process in line with work order.
  • 1.4 Follow organisational safety procedures throughout all maintenance and repair processes.
2. Set saw
  • 2.1 Set up saw in selected jig to enable setting work.
  • 2.2 Check kerf and finish requirements to suit machine horsepower, saw type and cutting conditions.
  • 2.3 Examine individual teeth to check amount of setting required.
  • 2.4 Maintain welding condition, saw temper and consistency of set between alternate teeth.
  • 2.5 Measure and assess teeth for correct setting.
  • 2.6 Bevel teeth and assess bevel length.
  • 2.7 Apply set to teeth and allow for estimated spring back.
  • 2.8 Check set to teeth using gauges in line with organisational procedures.
  • 2.9 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.
