Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse dance movements and apply the concepts and terminology of music to dance performances.The unit applies to those who are dancers, choreographers and dance teachers exploring the relationship between music and dance in the context of teaching dance, improving their own dance technique, devising dance sequences or reviewing dance performances. While supervision is provided, autonomy and judgement can be expected during the process of reflecting and analysing performances.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Analyse standard music notation
- 1.1 Identify signs used in interpreting the rhythm and pitch of musical pieces
- 1.2 Identify directions and markings for expression, volume and phrasing
- 1.3 Distinguish the major characteristics of music from various musical styles, with reference to their notation
- 1.4 Discuss with required personnel the way issues in music notation inform the process of analysing dance
2. Examine connections between movement and music in a cultural context
- 2.1 Distinguish between music from different cultural contexts
- 2.2 Contrast aspects of different styles of music
- 2.3 Analyse musical forms and characteristics used to structure music in dance, from different cultural contexts
- 2.4 Analyse the relationship between movement and music in dance pieces from different cultural contexts
- 2.5 Examine the relationship between the expressive qualities of movement and accompanying sound
3. Apply skills of musical analysis to dance performances
- 3.1 Evaluate the effectiveness of music scores in enhancing the narrative of dance performances
- 3.2 Evaluate the effectiveness of the relationship between music and dance in different performances
- 3.3 Interpret rhythm from written notation and observe accented beats in responding to performances
- 3.4 Identify choreographic devices that have been used to structure dance pieces and evaluate their effectiveness in meeting the demands of the music
- 3.5 Compile an assessment of the relationship between the use of music and a dance work narrative in the required format
- 3.6 Seek feedback from required personnel on own ability to detail the relationship between music and dance and identify areas for future improvement
