Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to investigate a tenure and land use history. This unit applies to those working to form a history of land use and tenure. Those undertaking this unit work independently, performing routine tasks in a range of familiar contexts.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify land.
  • 1.1. Obtain sufficient details to identify map, plan or aerial photo containing the area of land.
  • 1.2. Locate area of land on map, plan or aerial photo using information gathered.
2. Read plans and maps.
  • 2.1. Establish purpose of plan and map.
  • 2.2. Identify the type of information that can be obtained from different types of plans and maps.
  • 2.3. Obtain information from plan and map to suit intended purpose.
3. Search public land records.
  • 3.1. Establish the purpose for investigation of tenure and land use history to determine level of detail required.
  • 3.2. Access and search electronic data sources.
  • 3.3. Identify key repositories and access data sources and historic records to obtain information relating to identified land.
  • 3.4. Conduct consultations to identify and corroborate tenure and land use information.
  • 3.5. Source and analyse all available land records related to the area and compile evidence in accordance with purpose of the investigation.
4. Interpret information.
  • 4.1. Interpret legislation relevant to the jurisdiction.
  • 4.2. Interpret information in tenure related and land use documentation.
  • 4.3. Obtain expert assistance for interpretation.
  • 4.4. Identify and analyse evidence of past and present tenure and land use.
5. Record investigation findings.
  • 5.1. Compile chronology of tenure and land use history to address the purpose of investigation.
  • 5.2. Record history to suit intended purpose and audience.
  • 5.3. Present findings in required format.
6. Organise plans and diagrams.
  • 6.1. Establish the purpose of plan or diagram.
  • 6.2. Access and obtain information and resources required to arrange diagram or plan.
  • 6.3. Check diagram or plan and confirm that it suits the intended purpose.
