Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain stockpiles in coal mining, metalliferous mining and extractive industries. It involves maintaining stockpile structure and battering angle.The unit applies to those working in operational or supervisory roles. They generally perform a broad range of operational activities in their area of responsibility and are responsible for monitoring a safe work environment.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to maintain stockpiles
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply stockpiling operations documentation and confirm the work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Obtain and interpret geological and survey data
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
  • 1.5 Identify potential hazards and environmental issues, implement control measures within scope of own role and escalate where required
  • 1.6 Communicate work activities with others within scope of own role
  • 1.7 Confirm stockpile boundaries and signage are erected
  • 1.8 Access and apply safety procedures throughout the work and confirm safety of personnel, plant and equipment according to site requirements
2. Supress dust and maintain stockpile integrity, access roads and bunds
  • 2.1 Dump and move stockpile material to maintain appropriate battering angle of stockpile and prevent slumping according to site and job requirements
  • 2.2 Inspect stockpile structure and surrounding area with visual checks to assess the safety and progress of stockpile formation
  • 2.3 Inform appropriate personnel of any spillage and manage according to site and job requirements
  • 2.4 Identify, remove and dispose of any contaminants from stockpile
  • 2.5 Turn stockpile material according to site and job requirements
  • 2.6 Maintain stockpile structure to prevent dust creation and unwanted material movement
  • 2.7 Adjust stockpiling activities according to weather conditions and dust suppression policy
  • 2.8 Maintain stockpile access roads free from spillages and obstructions, and confirm equipment movement to and from stockpiles is not restricted according to site requirements
  • 2.9 Maintain safety and condition of bunds according to site requirements
3. Carry out post-operational procedures for maintaining stockpiles
  • 3.1 Conduct inspection and fault finding according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 3.2 Carry out operational maintenance, servicing, lubricating and housekeeping tasks according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 3.3 Inspect structures and components with visual checks for fault conditions, wear and need of repair or replacement
  • 3.4 Process written records and reports according to site requirements
