Elements and Performance Criteria

The range of variables places the competency in context and allows for differences between enterprises and workplaces, including practices, knowledge and requirements. The range of variables also provides a focus for assessment and relates to the unit as a whole. The following variables may be present.

Collection requirements:

Collection equipment:

dilly nets, drop nets, scoop nets, trawl/prawn nets, cast nets, gill nets, traps, (for example, bait traps, opera house), wing nets, snares

crowd nets and fish pumps or brails
hides or substrate (used with dip nets)

· bivalve seed collectors:
racks, sticks, tubes, slats
Christmas tree rope

Collection vehicle:

Broodstock:
· mature (adult forms)
· finfish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic reptiles, amphibians.

Seedstock:
· immature (fertilised eggs, hatchlings, larvae, post-larvae, juveniles, seed, spat, seedlings, sporophytes)
· finfish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic reptiles, amphibians, miscellaneous aquatic invertebrates, microalgae, seaweeds, aquatic plants.

Quantity requirements:
· number

· volume.

Quality requirements:
· spawning condition
· physical appearance
· health and activity status
· size
· sex
· life cycle stage.

Treatment:
· quarantine
· recovery
· acclimatisation.

Culture or holding structures:
· dams, ponds and pools, tanks and raceways
· cages, pontoons, enclosures and pens
· longlines, rafts, racks and trays, fences
· hatcheries and nurseries.

Occupational Health and Safety requirements may include:
· codes of practice, regulations and/or guidance notes which may apply in a jurisdiction
· enterprise-specific occupational and health and safety procedures, policies or standards
· use of PPE.

Ecologically sustainable development (ESD) principles:
· collecting organisms from the wild
· transporting live stock across State/Territory borders.

Each unit of competency has an evidence guide that relates directly to the performance criteria and the range of variables. Its purpose is to guide assessment of the unit in the workplace and/or training program. The following components provide information to assist this purpose.

Underpinning knowledge
The essential knowledge and understanding a person needs to perform work to the required standard include:
· behaviour of stock in relation to the collection of broodstock and seedstock from the wild
· collection, transport and holding equipment operating methods
· collection, transport and holding equipment maintenance and repairs
· effects of water and weather conditions on stock and Occupational Health and Safety
· SOPs for various tasks.

Practical skills
The essential skills a person needs to perform work to the required standards include:
· operating collection, transport and holding equipment
· maintaining and repairing collection, transport and holding equipment
· recognising normal and abnormal stock behaviour
· providing verbal report to supervisor on operation irregularities.

Licences may be required:
· if operating:
vessels
load shifting equipment (including forklifts)
vehicles
· if diving.

Literacy skills used for:
· reading and interpreting collection requirements
· recording collection information.

Numeracy skills used for:
· counting stock and containers.

Critical aspects of competence
Assessment must confirm ability to:
· collect, transport and hold broodstock and seedstock according to collection requirements and supervisor's instructions to ensure stock suffer minimal stress and damage.

Assessment must confirm knowledge of:
· collection, transport and holding equipment operation consistent with SOPs and manufacturer's guidelines.

Interdependent assessment of units

· SFIAQUA216A - Harvest aquacultured stock
· SFISTOR201B - Prepare and pack stock for live transport.

Context of assessment
Assessment is to be conducted at the workplace while collection, transport and holding is underway or in a simulated work environment.

Method of assessment
The following assessment methods are suggested:
· written or oral short-answer testing
· observation of practical demonstration or simulation.

Resources may include:
· harvest or collection schedule
· culture structures with/in water containing stock exhibiting a range of quality parameters
· collection, transport and holding equipment and SOPs and manufacturer's guidelines for operation
· collection, transporting and holding equipment
· data sheets for recording information
· SOPS for collation, transport and holding tanks.
