Description
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to inspect and test finished tyres.This unit applies to experienced operators who are required to identify codings and quality standards, perform inspections and tests, determine tyres needing action, apply stamps and codings, and solve problems within area of responsibility.This unit applies to an experienced operator demonstrating theoretical and technical knowledge and well developed skills in situations that require some discretion and judgement. The operator may work alone or as a member of a team and will work in liaison with other shift team members, team leader and supervisor, as appropriate.No licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan work requirements
- 1.1 Identify requirements for tyre inspection and testing from job specifications
- 1.2 Identify different tyre types, identification codings and quality standards required from job specifications
- 1.3 Perform pre-operational checks including checking for and controlling hazards
- 1.4 Identify housekeeping needs and waste management strategies for repair or scrap in preparation for work to be undertaken
2. Perform pre-production tasks
- 2.1 Conduct visual inspection of tyres to identify clear defects
- 2.2 Manually locate bumps or dips
- 2.3 Check inspection equipment settings and make adjustments to meet job specifications
- 2.4 Undertake other pre-startup checks according to equipment specifications and workplace procedures
3. Operate and adjust tyre testing machines
- 3.1 Start up and operate machine to rotate and test tyres, and make adjustments to settings to meet job specifications
- 3.2 Ensure process is operating according to equipment specifications and workplace procedures
- 3.3 Follow checking and testing processes to assess if results meet testing requirements and quality standards, and apply strategies for managing non-conforming results
- 3.4 Maintain continuity of process to support ongoing testing
- 3.5 Accurately complete logs and records
- 3.6 Apply waste management strategies to collect discarded or nonconforming materials to be disposed of, recycled, or reprocessed according to workplace procedures
- 3.7 Clean work area, and clean, adjust and lubricate equipment according to equipment specifications and workplace procedures
- 3.8 Pause or stop machine cycle in normal and abnormal circumstances according to workplace procedures
4. Stamp, label and sort tyres
- 4.1 Follow tyre identification system to stamp identification number and weekly code on each tyre
- 4.2 Sort passed tyres by coding ready for transfer to next stage of operation
- 4.3 Sort failed tyres for repair or scrap
5. Anticipate and solve process control variances
- 5.1 Recognise existing or potential process control variances and their causes
- 5.2 Determine, prioritise and implement remedial and preventative actions based on identified issues and causes
- 5.3 Monitor process control variances and corrective actions taken until resolved
- 5.4 Accurately maintain records and logbooks
