Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install and maintain roadside fixtures in civil construction, including erecting guardrails, finish ends and road fencing, and installing guide posts and delineators and maintaining signs.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to install and maintain roadside fixtures
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply roadside fixtures installation and maintenance documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures within scope of own role
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
- 1.5 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements
- 1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment required to carry out tasks and check for faults
2. Install guide posts and delineators
- 2.1 Set out job to alignment and locations according to job requirements
- 2.2 Excavate holes for poles according to job requirements
- 2.3 Install guideposts according to job requirements
- 2.4 Install delineators according to job requirements
3. Erect guardrails
- 3.1 Set out position of guardrails according to job requirements
- 3.2 Finish guardrails according to job requirements
- 3.3 Erect and/or install guardrails in specified location according to job requirements
4. Erect road fencing
- 4.1 Set out fence line and excavate positions of fence line and post hole according to job requirements
- 4.2 Install fence posts plumb and to alignment according to job requirements
- 4.3 Fit and fix rails, cladding mesh or panels according to job requirements
5. Repair roadside fixtures
- 5.1 Identify roadside fixture faults and determine methods of repair
- 5.2 Carry out repairs and routine maintenance according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
6. Maintain signs
- 6.1 Maintain signs and support structures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 6.2 Carry out repairs according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 6.3 Replace reflective patches according to cyclic maintenance program
7. Conduct clean-up activities
- 7.1 Clear work area and recycle or dispose of materials according to site requirements
- 7.2 Store or stack unused materials according to site requirements
- 7.3 Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
