Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and apply specialist acting techniques to create convincing characters from a range of American, British and Australian musical theatre repertoires.The unit applies to those who are required to sing and dance in musical theatre productions. At this level, supervision and guidance are provided during practice sessions. However, individuals are expected to work independently on experimenting with ways to convey storylines and characters by integrating vocal and movement skills typical of specific musical theatre genres.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to apply acting techniques for musical theatre repertoire
  • 1.1 Identify and analyse physical problems that could limit movement and physical expression, or cause injury
  • 1.2 Discuss ways to avoid physical and vocal problems with required personnel and develop strategies for addressing problems if they arise
  • 1.3 Perform vocal and physical warm-up routine in preparation for performance activities
  • 1.4 Develop individual practice schedule with exercises to strengthen and expand vocal and physical techniques
2. Develop and apply acting techniques in selected musical theatre repertoires
  • 2.1 Identify and discuss acting techniques associated with major musical theatre genres with required personnel
  • 2.2 Identify and explore motivations and actions of characters from major American, British and Australian musical theatre repertoires using analysis of text and lyrics
  • 2.3 Develop interpretation of character and facilitate the process of creating convincing character on stage using techniques from different acting methods
  • 2.4 Add depth to character interpretation and portrayal using knowledge of historical and cultural influences
  • 2.5 Vary portrayal of character in monologues, duologues and songs using a range of physical and vocal techniques and acting methods
  • 2.6 Seek feedback on characterisation from others and adjust performance technique as required
  • 2.7 Practise performing from American, British and Australian musical theatre repertoires in preparation for auditions
  • 2.8 Participate in scene rehearsals for selected musical theatre repertoires
3. Review and maintain acting skills
  • 3.1 Evaluate own development of specialist acting performance skills in musical theatre context
  • 3.2 Use feedback from others to identify and develop strategies for improving own acting skills
  • 3.3 Maintain and update knowledge of musical theatre trends, stagecraft, and production protocols and procedures
  • 3.4 Attend performances by industry practitioners and document new ideas and industry trends that can be applied to own practice
