Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to document dance sequences using basic dance notation methodologies and basic video recording and editing techniques.The unit applies to those who document dance sequences or dance productions in the context of dance teaching, improving their own dance technique, devising dance sequences, or preserving information about performances for historical or cultural purposes. While supervision is provided, autonomy and judgement can be expected when coordinating documentation projects.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to document dance sequences
- 1.1 Discuss and identify reasons for documenting dance sequences and the range of components to be documented with required personnel
- 1.2 Confirm elements of dance sequences that need special emphasis in documentation
- 1.3 Organise materials and resources required for dance sequence documentation
- 1.4 Identify safety requirements for recording and documenting dance sequences
- 1.5 Confirm timeline for documentation requirements and create project plan accordingly
2. Apply basic notation skills
- 2.1 Confirm the form of basic written notation to be used
- 2.2 Practise using the symbols and terminology associated with required notation method
- 2.3 Notate aspects of dance sequences and music in line with requirements
- 2.4 Review notation with relevant personnel to identify adjustments that need to be made
- 2.5 Finalise notation and submit to required personnel
3. Record dance sequences
- 3.1 Set up basic recording equipment and accessories, accommodating angles, perspectives and sound quality required for documentation purposes
- 3.2 Coordinate recording of dance sequences and any commentary required
- 3.3 Review recordings progressively and request repetition of sequences as required
- 3.4 Interact with dancers and others involved in the recording process in ways that create trust and respect
- 3.5 Carry out all recording activities according to safety requirements
4. Finalise documentation
- 4.1 Review raw footage of recordings and determine editing requirements with required personnel
- 4.2 Create first cut of video clips using features of basic digital imaging and video editing software
- 4.3 Review first cut with required personnel and incorporate feedback into final version as required
- 4.4 Output files in the required format and create backup copies according to organisational procedures
- 4.5 Confirm documentation material meets requirements and submit complete package to required personnel
- 4.6 Identify opportunities for improving documentation process using feedback from required personnel and self-reflection
