Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist with well control in coal mining and drilling. It prepares individuals to monitor and assist operational and basic maintenance activities.It applies to those working in assistant roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.No licensing, legislation or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to assist with well control
- 1.1 Obtain, read and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply well control documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activity
- 1.5 Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
2. Assist with well control activities
- 2.1 Monitor flows and returns for required volumes and rates, and report inconsistencies to driller
- 2.2 Assist in operating well control pumps according to job requirements and workplace procedures
- 2.3 Read and interpret measuring devices to monitor required operation of well control process and equipment
- 2.4 Communicate operational information to other crew members during well control operations
- 2.5 Assist in installing and maintaining equipment according to job requirements and workplace procedures
- 2.6 Participate in emergency drills and exercises
3. Monitor and report safety issues
- 3.1 Identify, address and report hazards associated with well control under varying working conditions
- 3.2 Recognise kick indicators and advise driller during well control operations
- 3.3 Identify and report ignition sources as required
- 3.4 Identify and report sources and presence of flammable gases and emissions as required
- 3.5 Identify and report running well control equipment malfunctions as required
