Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create different hair styles for productions in the film, television, photographic and live entertainment industries. It involves generating ideas for hair designs, and working with styling tools and products to create hair styles according to production requirements.The unit applies to those who use a range of temporary colouring, setting and styling methods to produce current and period hairstyles for performers, models and actors. They may work independently or as a member of a make-up and hair design team.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

1. Clarify styling requirements
- 1.1 Identify factors impacting how hair needs to be styled to meet production requirements in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Source reference materials and research aspects of styling assignments
- 1.3 Generate different ideas for hair designs that meet production requirements
- 1.4 Prepare styling designs according to production requirements and discuss with required personnel, refining designs as required
2. Prepare for styling assignments
- 2.1 Set up work station with styling aids and tools that meet production requirements
- 2.2 Determine variables of working environment and adjust planned procedures as required
- 2.3 Explain styling procedures to required personnel and respond to questions
- 2.4 Test performer skin for potential adverse reactions and take action according to production requirements
- 2.5 Confirm facilities and equipment meet health, hygiene and safety requirements
3. Create hair designs
- 3.1 Select styling aids, tools and techniques according to production requirements
- 3.2 Check performers are comfortable during styling sessions
- 3.3 Produce style designs according to production requirements
- 3.4 Confirm with required personnel that style designs meet production requirements and adjust styles as required
- 3.5 Make required adjustments to performer hair according to production requirements
- 3.6 Re-create same designs for performers on consecutive occasions as required
- 3.7 Document hair designs for future performances and continuity purposes
