Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to assist with the process of preparing and providing feed and water for livestock in a production system.The unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision and exercise limited autonomy with some accountability for their own work. They identify and provide solutions to a limited range of predictable problems.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace, and animal welfare legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines, and sustainability and biosecurity practices.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare and distribute feed
- 1.1 Confirm with supervisor daily feeding program requirements
- 1.2 Select and check tools, machinery and equipment
- 1.3 Identify workplace health and safety hazards and report to supervisor
- 1.4 Select, fit, use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the task
- 1.5 Use correct manual handling techniques when loading and unloading materials
- 1.6 Provide assistance for weighing and measuring feed
- 1.7 Collect and distribute feed from silos or other storage areas
- 1.8 Check automatic or computerised feeders, where used, for blockages and correct functioning
- 1.9 Report feed stock abnormalities or irregularities to supervisor
2. Check watering systems
- 2.1 Adjust watering systems height or position
- 2.2 Check and make adjustments to water level and flow
- 2.3 Empty and clean watering containers or lines where necessary
3. Complete the feeding process
- 3.1 Document basic feeding records and report to supervisor
- 3.2 Clean, maintain and store materials, tools, machinery and equipment according to supervisor instructions
- 3.3 Follow workplace biosecurity policies where required
- 3.4 Report work outcomes and malfunctions, faults, wear or damage of tools, machinery and equipment to supervisor
