Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and explore vocal techniques required for musical theatre performances.The unit applies to those who are building vocal techniques associated with conveying meaning and emotion through effective delivery of spoken word and songs. The process includes supervision during practice sessions; however, individuals are expected to work individually at expanding their musical theatre performance techniques. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare vocal care plan
- 1.1 Analyse aspects of the human voice required for musical theatre performances in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Analyse physical problems and emotional states that can affect the voice
- 1.3 Discuss with required personnel strategies for avoiding physical problems and addressing problems if they arise
- 1.4 Perform vocal warm-up and cool-down procedures before starting vocal activities
2. Demonstrate vocal techniques required for musical theatre
- 2.1 Plan practice sessions and strategies for developing vocal techniques in consultation with required personnel,
- 2.2 Analyse scripts for ideas of how to develop character, relationship and actions to suit the circumstances of scenes
- 2.3 Practise clear articulation, projection and breathing techniques in the support of effective delivery of spoken word texts
- 2.4 Develop expertise in singing and speaking in different accents and dialects by applying required phonetic and speech rhythms
- 2.5 Develop techniques for maintaining vocal consistency when moving from spoken to sung text
- 2.6 Develop healthy performance habits and technical skills through the use of good posture
3. Develop and review expertise
- 3.1 Identify sources for building and analysing knowledge of musical theatre trends
- 3.2 Identify and develop ways to improve own vocal skills using feedback from required personnel
- 3.3 Attend performances by industry practitioners and identify new ideas, techniques and trends that can be applied to own musical theatre practice
