Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to prepare and cut material to shape using sawing equipment in order to produce shaped timber products. Work is completed in forest products factory setting and includes operator maintenance.The unit applies to Production Worker, Sawmill Worker, Manufacturing Assistant, Saw Operator. No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for shaping
  • 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Identify type and quantity of materials to be shaped and obtain from storage location.
  • 1.3 Select appropriate equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • 1.4 Identify profile to be cut and select cutting blades.
2. Set up shaping equipment
  • 2.1 Follow lock out procedures, select and attach machine guides to machinery.
  • 2.2 Check saw blade for sharpness and correct alignment.
  • 2.3 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions environmental protection practices.
  • 2.4 Set cut in line with required shape and to minimise waste.
  • 2.5 Dispose of off-cuts in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 2.6 Stack material stack in close proximity to maximise ease of machine feeding.
  • 2.7 Test equipment set-up for correct alignment through trial run on timber and adjust as required.
3. Cut material to shape
  • 3.1 Reject material with defects and dispose of in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 3.2 Feed material into machine at feed rate prescribed by organisational requirements.
  • 3.3 Follow, maintain and adjust cutting sequence to produce required quantity and maximise feed rate.
  • 3.4 Check jig or shape line regularly and adjust to maintain desired cut.
  • 3.5 Stack material safely in designated location in line with work order requirements.
  • 3.6 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.
  • 3.7 Complete production and quality records and report in line with organisational procedures.
4. Complete operator maintenance
  • 4.1 Follow organisational safety procedures to lock out equipment.
  • 4.2 Check saw blades for bluntness or damage.
  • 4.3 Remove and replace saw blades in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • 4.4 Dispose of used blades in line with organisational procedures and environmental protection practices.
  • 4.5 Complete basic non-specialist maintenance for equipment.
  • 4.6 Keep machine area clear of dust, off-cuts and debris.
  • 4.7 Record and report equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.
