Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to pilot or escort oversized and/or overmassed loads.Work must be carried out in accordance with National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) regulations for piloting and escorting oversized and overmassed loads, and relevant state and/or territory roads and traffic authority licence and/or permit requirements.It includes preparing for pilot and/or escort operation, carrying out communications regarding pilot/escort operation, and fulfilling all functions related to piloting and escorting vehicles carrying oversized and overmassed loads.Work is performed with limited or minimum supervision, and with limited accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for pilot or escort operation
  • 1.1 Job hazards are identified and required actions taken to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
  • 1.2 Maintenance needs of pilot and/or escort vehicles and associated equipment are identified in accordance with maintenance schedule or fault reports
  • 1.3 Pilot and/or escort vehicles and associated equipment are prepared for operation in accordance with manufacturer specifications, regulations and workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Minor vehicle maintenance is carried out in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications
  • 1.5 Post-maintenance inspections and tests of pilot and/or escort vehicles and associated equipment are completed
  • 1.6 Inspection outcomes, identified faults and repairs are recorded in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Carry out communications regarding pilot or escort operation
  • 2.1 Transport companies whose vehicles are scheduled for escort are consulted to confirm requirements for escort operation
  • 2.2 Escort permit is verified for completeness and accuracy, and convoy is checked to ensure accordance with permit, regulations and workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Permit holder is advised of the results of the permit check
  • 2.4 Convoy is briefed and given instructions and directions about escort operation in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Conduct pilot and/or escort operation
  • 3.1 Required vehicle positioning, traffic warning and directional signalling procedures are implemented to enable safe passage of load
  • 3.2 Safety equipment is operated and roadside obstacles are positioned to ensure safe passage of load in accordance with regulations and workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Precautions are taken to ensure convoy personnel are aware of road and other conditions that may impact on load and vehicle security
  • 3.4 All required liaison with relevant authorities is undertaken
  • 3.5 Documentation is completed and proofread in accordance with regulations and workplace procedures
