DescriptorThis unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and respond to clinical emergencies and to perform basic life support in a cardiac testing environment

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify the need for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- 1.1 Identify client requiring assistance
- 1.2 Check immediate environment for safety and complete required action to remove or reduce risks
- 1.3 Accurately assess client'sresponsiveness
- 1.4 Correctly identify need for CPR and summon medical assistance
- 1.5 Utilise personal protective equipment in accordance with standard and additional precautions
- 1.6 Check client's airway for patency and clear any obstruction
- 1.7 Establish and maintain client's airway
- 1.8 Correctly assess client's breathing
- 1.9 Correctly assess clients circulation
- 1.10 Correctly position the client
- 1.11 Promptly obtain emergency equipment and make ready for use
2. Perform CPR
- 2.1 Identify the client as apnoeic and mouth to mask breathing is correctly performed
- 2.2 Assess the clients pulse as absent and correctly perform external cardiac compression
- 2.3 Regularly assess the client for the return of spontaneous breathing and circulation
- 2.4 Accurately communicate a complete history of the incident to medical/paramedical personnel
- 2.5 Document actions in accordance with organisation policies and procedures
3. Support the client on completion of basic CPR
- 3.1 Client is provided with appropriate care and support during the immediate recovery period
- 3.2 Respond accurately to questions from the medical/paramedical personnel concerning the incident
- 3.3 Provide the client with facilities and refreshments as appropriate for the recovery period
