Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to communicate in Auslan with some confidence on familiar, routine and some non-routine matters. Communication may take place in any situation including personal, public, social, employment and educational domains.This unit aligns to an adaptation, for sign languages, of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), BI: Independent User.This is an Auslan signer who can:understand the main points when clear, standard language (which for sign language users may be a locally used variation) is used and the topics are familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.deal with most situations likely to arise where the sign language is usedproduce simple connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal interestdescribe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Comprehend routine signed text on familiar matters.

1.1. Derive the meaning, from contextual cues, of unknown and unfamiliar signs to deduce sentence meaning for familiar subjects.
1.2. Extract main points from recorded Auslan texts about familiar subjects when signed relatively slowly and clearly.
1.3. Comprehend simple technical instructions and detailed directions provided in Auslan.
1.4. Follow the main points of live discussion between proficient or native signers when delivered in standard sign.

2. Process vocabulary and grammar for signed exchanges on familiar matters.

2.1. Use and show good control, but with some significant error and circumlocution, of an elementary vocabulary repertoire of signs dealing with familiar subjects.
2.2. Use reasonably accurate signed sentence patterns about familiar subjects so that meaning and questions are understood but with some self-correction.

3. Present in Auslan on familiar subjects.

3.1. Give prepared straightforward signed announcements or presentations on familiar topics.
3.2. Communicate main points of immediate relevance with reasonable precision.
3.3 Answer, in Auslan, follow-up questions, asking for repetition as required.

4. Engage in spontaneous Auslan conversations on familiar subjects.

4.1. Initiate, maintain and close simple face-to-face conversations on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
4.2. Pronounce signs clearly and intelligibly but with an “accent” sometimes evident and with occasional mispronunciations.
4.3. Continue with relative ease throughout the conversation with some infrequent pauses and repetition.
4.4. Follow signing of proficient or native speakers when clearly articulated in standard sign but with some words and phrases repeated.
4.5. Ask for clarification or elaboration of signing when not understood.
