Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to fit out marine vessels. It includes set out, construction, assembly and installation of a variety of components and also includes the installation of thermal, noise, vibration and fire control insulation materials. This unit applies to both 'on the job' and 'pre-fabricated structure fitouts' and all work is carried out safely to specified industry standards for timber joinery, surface finish, appearance characteristics, dressing or plugging of fastenings.Where lines plan drawings and loftings are required to be interpreted unit MEM09021 Interpret and produce drawings of curved 3-D shapes should also be selected.Where straightforward installation of fittings/accessories is required unit MEM18002 Use power tools/hand held operations should also be selected. Where construction of fibre reinforced plastics components are required to be undertaken unit MEM25002 Form and integrate fibre-reinforced structures should also be selected.Where construction of solid timber shapes using hot processes is required to be undertaken unit MEM25009 Form timber shapes using hot processes should also be selected.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Band: AUnit Weight: 4

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
- 1.4 Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, fitout plans, job sheets or work instructions
2 Construct fitout components
- 2.1 Identify materials for fitout from fitout plans
- 2.2 Check take-off quantities and produce cutting list, if required
- 2.3 Machine material to suit job scantling sizes, strength and appearance requirements
- 2.4 Mark/cut out materials to specification
- 2.5 Identify components requiring assembly and determine the sequence of assembly
3 Assemble fitout components
- 3.1 Identify method of assembling and fastening components
- 3.2 Assemble components to specifications
- 3.3 Remove waste materials in accordance with work practices and relevant legislation
- 3.4 Sand surface area of assembled components for installation, where applicable
- 3.5 Pre-coat component surface for preservation according to standard specifications and procedures, where applicable
4 Install components
- 4.1 Mark surface area for layout installation, where applicable
- 4.2 Apply fitting and levelling practices
- 4.3 Select fastenings to suit job requirements
- 4.4 Fix components to meet specified job requirements
- 4.5 Apply clean work practices for coating and adhesive applications
