Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to navigate, communicate, and apply safe work processes and procedures using a self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus in an irrespirable atmosphere in the resources and infrastructure industries.It applies to those who work in operational roles. They generally work in teams and have some responsibility for the outcomes of others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to operate in breathing apparatus
- 1.1 Access, interpret and apply operating in breathing apparatus documentation
- 1.2 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.3 Assess potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
- 1.4 Select and wear required protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- 1.5 Ensure fitness levels are suitable to operate in breathing apparatus
- 1.6 Carry out pre-operational equipment tests and record test outcomes
- 1.7 Inspect apparatus for damage, missing components and readiness for operation before entering mine
- 1.8 Put on and adjust self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus
- 1.9 Select additional required personal protective equipment
- 1.10 Communicate and coordinate activities with others
2. Operate in irrespirable atmosphere
- 2.1 Navigate in breathing apparatus
- 2.2 Identify, monitor and control risks and hazards
- 2.3 Establish and maintain communication with team members and team leader throughout the operation
- 2.4 Apply breathing apparatus techniques and safe work procedures
- 2.5 Follow unit failure processes according to workplace procedures
- 2.6 Monitor the operation of the breathing apparatus and the condition of self and other personnel
- 2.7 Follow entrapment procedures
3. Carry out post-operation activities
- 3.1 Close down self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus
- 3.2 Remove self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus
- 3.3 Process required written reports according to workplace policies and procedures and communicate to relevant personnel
- 3.4 Strip, clean, service, check, reassemble and test breathing apparatus
- 3.5 Record and report any faults
- 3.6 Store equipment ready for operational use
