Description
To provide the academic knowledge required by
students to prepare them to be in command of a
vessel up to 24 metres in length operating up to 100
miles from the coast.
To prepare students for oral examination by the
appropriate State Authority for the issuing of a
Certificate of Competency as Master Class 5 or
Skipper Grade 3.

1 The following modules may be completed prior to the seagoing
industrial experience:
- Small Craft Operations
- Elements of Shipboard Safety
- Marine Radio Certification
- Introduction to Radar.
2 Candidates with 15 months industrial experience may attempt all
modules with the exception of Nautical Knowledge, but will not be eligible for
the oral examination.
3 Candidates will require 30 months of industrial experience to be
eligible to complete the course.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Industrial experience is as approved by the Department of Marine and Harbours
(WA) (DMH). Standard Western Australian Department of Training exemption
procedures will apply in recognition of prior learning
industrial experience:
- Small Craft Operations
- Elements of Shipboard Safety
- Marine Radio Certification
- Introduction to Radar.
