Description

GENERAL

To consolidate the English proficiency of non-English speaking background migrants to enable them to seek and obtain employment and/or further education.

To equip learners with English related to their area of study and to the workplace.

To provide learners with language support and assistance to enable them to better understand modules within the subject area stream.

To provide learners with access to vocational and further education pathways.

To provide learners with access to specific vocational skills that they lack in their existing qualifications and/or experience and that are required by Australian industry, to enable them to obtain work in their chosen field.

This course is designed with subject streams to allow for flexibility in the selection of relevant areas of study to upgrade skills in a range of job fields. This enables individuals to select subjects appropriate to their background and employment needs.

As the focus of the course is job oriented, selection of general curriculum options within the CGEA component should be reflected in the content of the options. As the course aims to improve learner's language skills, in using the General Curriculum Options learners will need to achieve Learning Outcome 3.3: Can Communicate Ideas and Information, in addition to a minimum of two other outcomes, in order to complete the module.

STREAM SPECIFIC

Stream A - AutoCAD for Science Professionals

- To provide an introduction to the concepts and applications of
computer-aided design software and its use in the workplace

- To provide an introduction to the use of mathematical software in
expressing a variety of engineering design solutions

- To provide an opportunity for learners to identify and research
professional and industry organisations in their field.

Stream B - Computerised Accounting

- To make learners aware of Australian practices in the accounts
area, ie. in maintenance of ledgers, completion of taxation forms,
banking, etc.

- To provide an introduction to the use and application of
computerised accounting hardware and software

- To introduce learners to the use and application of computers in an
office environment, especially in the use of word processing.

Stream C - Introduction to Child Care

- To give learners a basic knowledge and understanding of child
development and health and hygiene issues

- To enable learners to obtain the practical skills involved in making
resource materials.

Stream D - Introduction to Computing

- To provide an introduction to word processing, spreadsheets and
database, and to computer-related technology

- To give learners a basic knowledge of computer usage and basic
mathematics involved in computing.

Stream E - Science and Technology

- To provide training in scientific and/or technical occupations

- To enable learners to gain an understanding of the science industry
in Western Australia

- To provide learners with an introduction to scientific computing
applications.
