Delivery modes essential to this module are as follows:

Lecturer Centred Delivery
To be delivered by lecturers who have extensive experience working in the Human
Services Industry, preferably at a management level, and who possess a tertiary
qualification of Associate Diploma/Diploma or higher.

Direct input from the Lecturer is relevant and necessary, especially upon
introduction of new material (theories, concepts, background material).
Lecturers should provide an overview of such material in sufficient depth,
summarising points where necessary. Lecturers should avoid overly long
lectures and opportunities for dialogue with learners should be made as a
matter of course.

Group Exercises
Learners to be given the opportunity to participate in the discussion and
contribute to the development of ideas. Such opportunities should emphasise
the importance of learners engaging in critical though

Internal Assessment 100%

Performance is expected across a range of contexts in which social and
political inequality occurs as a condition of the emergence of community
development (including but not limited to class, gender, ethnicity, ability,
sexuality, age and geographic location, however, assessment will not occur in
all contexts).

Learners are required to satisfactorily complete three assignments.

Assignment 1 - Case Study
The emergence of a community development initiative/activity.

Learners will select a case study from the list of Australian examples provided
by the lecturer, or one negotiated by the lecturer.

In essay form of between 500-1000 words, learners will examine the emergence of
the example selected in relation to:
- the individual and/or collective experiences/issues which contributed
to the development of the activity
- a determination of key players and action taken
- a determination of how, if at all, actions challenge/d existing
approaches to the issues at stake
- a determination of the implications for community development practice
of this type of activity.

Assignment 2 -Research and Tutorial Presentation
Community development strategies for change.

In small groups, learners will select a community development strategy from a
list provided. A worker or workers at an agency are observed and/or
interviewed to ascertain:
- the aims of the strategy
- the focus of change
- the desired outcomes of the strategy including the means of measuring
its success.

The group tutorial presentation focuses on how community development workers
utilise various strategies and methods to effect social change. Learners
should identify the tasks required to undertake the strategy; skills and
knowledge required by the agency; and constraints encountered by the agency in
implementing the strategy. Learners to describe theoretical perspectives
utilised by the agency in the implementation of the strategy.

Learners to research their chosen agency and strategy in small groups and
identify different interpretations of each strategy based on theoretical
perspectives introduced throughout the course.

Learners should demonstrate a comparative approach to this assignment,
comparing and contrasting the assumptions and approaches of the group with
those of the interviewee.
Assessment should be made of presentation skills including methods used to
convey ideas and deliver information to the whole group.

Assignment 3 - Essay
Theory and practice - what is the relationship?

Learners are to keep a journal for the duration of the module which should be:
- used to consider learners perspectives of the examples, issues and
theories presented in the subject, and
- related to community development practice.

Learners will complete a 1000 word essay drawn from and building upon their
journal which summarises their findings and demonstrates the following:
- relationship between theory and practice
- the learners view of community development based on a critical
analysis of models (ie how the subjective position of the learner shapes their
assessment of the effectiveness of community development theories and
strategies), and
- identification of constraints of the selected model.

Learners to submit their journal alongside the essay. Assessment is based on
the level of critical analysis evident in the essay and the evidence of ongoing
work on the journal throughout the module.

Assignment 1 - Case Study:
- Assessment by Lecturer plus peer review of case study process in class.

Assignment 2 - Research and Tutorial presentation:
- In class assessment of the group presentation by Lecturer and peers.
All learners to complete a personal and group evaluation. Interviewee to
complete an evaluation sheet addressing the standard of interview questions and
the interview context (ie how well the interview/observation is conducted)
which forms part of the group assessment. Performance is expected across a
range of contexts in which social and political inequality occurs as a
condition of the emergence of community development.

Assignment 3 - Essay:
- Essay assessed by Lecturer. Performance is expected across a range of
contexts in which social and political inequality occurs as a condition of the
emergence of community development.
