Description
To teach the basic concepts related to the use of
database management systems.
To teach the skills required to design and implement
simple relational database systems.

Students must pass the examination.
Where a pass is achieved in the examination, the
overall mark is the sum of the two components,
weighted as shown above.
Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100%
weighting for the written paper.
Examination
One two-hour written paper consisting of the following components:
- A series of short questions covering the following topics:
o comparison of traditional file systems and
database
o main features and terms related to Database Management Systems o
SQL 25%
- Construct a simple relational database with appropriate
field names, etc., and then give the commands needed to answer given queries
and updates 25%
- Design a relational database for a given application which
involves using two entities. Also, discuss the use of
keys 25%
- Write sections of code in the database programming
language that was used in the course, to solve a
problem 25%
Internal Assessment
- Create a database consisting of a single relation, and
demonstrate the ability to enter, edit and report on the
data 15%
- Create a database involving more than one relation, and
manipulate the data using SQL or the equivalent.
