Description
To provide a theoretical framework within which human service workers at first
line management level can understand and analyse:
- the behaviour, perspectives and interactions of individuals and groups
from different sectors of contemporary Australian society
- social economic and political factors and processes which influence
the distribution of power and resources within contemporary Australian society
- the operation of formal and informal social systems and their impact
on human service organisations, policies, practices and service provision.

A combination of classroom based teaching, independent study, self paced
learning and flexible delivery modes may be used. Future options will include
flexible delivery resources.
While much of the content of this module is theory/knowledge based, a strong
focus on application of theory and knowledge should be maintained throughout.
Participants should be encouraged to test and apply ideas, concepts, theories
and models using current examples of social issues wherever possible.
Recognition of Prior Learning
There will be provision for learners to apply for exemption from this module on
the basis of evidence that learning outcomes have been achieved through formal
study, work or life experience.

The application of sociological methods, concepts and approaches to analysing
issues relevant to human service provision may be assessed by a research
project or report focusing on a contemporary issue relevant to one area of
service provision.
The learner will be provided with:
- Access to a suitable learning environment
- Access to relevant learning resource materials
