Description
To provide the student with the basic skills required to apply surveying
equipment for the purposes of contouring, setting out simple figures including
curves, determining area and volume, long and cross sections, and "pick up" for
detail surveys.

Evidence Guide
Written examination 50%
Internal Assessment 50%
In order to pass the subject, the student must obtain a minimum 50% of the
available marks in each section of the assessment.
Written examination paper (2 hours) 50%
Practical tasks 50%
Set out contours by direct methods
-Determine heights on a level grid and interpolate contours from the results
-Observe levels to determine a combined long and cross section traverse
-Set out a rectilinear figure (eg. house pad) from offsets from cadastral
boundaries using theodolite and steel band
-Set out precise horizontal angles
-Determine the area of an irregular figure using coordinate method
-Determine heights on level grid and hence determine volume
-Determine the area of a x-section using defined surface gradients
-Determine long and cross section levels (eg. for roads) and hence compute
cut/fill volumes
-Set out small radius curves using offsets
-Set out a horizontal curve by radiation and check using offsets
-Use a theodolite and EDM to determine position and height for a detail "pick
up" survey
-Clearly and unambiguously record all observations in a suitable field book
using industry standard methods.
