Description
To provide the learner with a sufficient basic introduction into the
mathematics skills associated with and applied to the subjects of Mechanics,
Electrotechnology, Thermodynamics, and Naval Architecture as the learner needs
these to prepare for onboard duties as a Marine Engineer Officer.

Range of Variables
This module is to be taught in a classroom which has access to a complete range
of modern audio visual presentation equipment.
Appropriate computer simulation software should be available to assist those
learners who need additional, self-paced tutorials.
The teaching method used will be modified lecture, inter-linked, so far as is
practical, with work from those subject areas to which it is intended to apply.

The assessment of this module is holistic in nature and requires assessing on
the integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this module, the
learner must show evidence of achievement of the module aim. This approach
enables the assessment to be carried out by different means to achieve an
holistic outcome.
The assessment scheme is generally designed to ensure that critical knowledge
and skills are assessed more than once and in a variety of ways throughout the
module’s assessment events. This provides a valid assessment of the learner’s
abilities and avoids misrepresentation of failures caused by single cases of
poor performance.
Assessment methods include:
- Short answer questions, requiring calculation and the occasional use
of a handheld, scientific type calculator
