State Implementation and Classification
Description
To provide students with the basic skills and knowledge required to maintain
and operate marine engines, machinery, and systems. The course provides the
theoretical knowledge required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority
(AMSA) for the position of Senior Marine Engineer on board vessels with a
propulsive power of 3000 KW or more, operating in Australian coastal and
international voyages.
Following sea service as required by AMSA the graduates would be employed as
watchkeeping marine engineers on board ship. They would be engaged to perform
any or all of the following tasks:

operate, while in charge of a watch, all marine propulsion, auxiliary
and mechanical services machinery

plan and monitor all maintenance for marine propulsion, auxiliary and
mechanical services machinery
-
direct watchkeeping engineers and integrated ratings at sea and in
port in the operation and maintenance of machinery, and supervise shore labour
in port and in dry-dock in contract maintenance work
-
access and input data into computer systems
-
plan and monitor fire prevention activities and co-ordinate fire
suppression activities
-
monitor machinery and ship performance using theoretical knowledge
involving mechanics, thermodynamics, electrotechnology and naval architecture.
