This unit combines the skills required to manage the economic operation of a shipping company or port organisation with the underpinning knowledge of the economic principles of the shipping market. It provides candidates with knowledge of the interrelationship between shipping company structures, the economic organisation of the international shipping market, political influences and legal interventions. It provides an overview of the affect of the maritime regulatory framework on the economic principles and global patterns of maritime trade. It provides an outline of the business, economic and legal aspects required for the efficient operation of a company.

This unit includes the interpretation of the shipping market cycle and the appraising of risk on financial investment aspects of shipping companies and ports. It includes the assessment of supply and demand, costs and revenue on the financial performance of the maritime industry in each period of the shipping cycle.
