Description
To provide senior Marine Engineer and Deck Officers with the instruction and
practical experience to enable them to plan and monitor fire prevention
techniques and to co-ordinate activities.

Range of Variables
This module is to be taught in a classroom with access to a complete range of
audio visual presentation equipment. Practical demonstration equipment capable
of being used by the instructor to illustrate points and subsequently by the
learners to reinforce points, must be available.
Use of practical demonstration laboratory/workshop and/or simulator is required
for a range of practical experimentation to back up classroom learning.
The teaching method used will be modified lecture, integrated theory/practical
as well as both reactive and proactive demonstration.

Internal Assessment 100%
Written objective test will be composed of a combined True/False statements and
Multiple Choice paper lasting 1 hour.
The Practical Test will be on-the-job assessment by direct observation
Australian Standards Framework Level 6. The learner will be required to
control and/or participate in fire emergency teams to extinguish small A, B, C
class fires. On the fabricated ship structure the learner will control and/or
participate in fire emergency teams to extinguish A, B, C and D class fires and
retrieve casualties in practical exercises involving:
- level entry through a steel watertight door
- vertical downward entry to an engine room fire
- accommodation fires
- deck fires
- cargo fires
- on deck helicopter fire
- the use of a simulated fixed system.
Throughout these exercises the learner will clean and recharge extinguishers,
SCBA sets, empty and restow hoses.
The Assignment will be a combined written and seminar presentation where a
joint deck and engineering team of at least 2 learners each will prepare a
particular fire emergency plan for a specific ship type. The types will vary
and could cover:
- a modern OMBO, UMS container ship fitted with GMDSS
- a bulk carrier
- a passenger ship
- RO-RO
- a tanker
- a general cargo ship
- an off-shore supply vessel or other specialised craft.
Written objective test will be composed of a combined True/False statements and
Multiple Choice paper lasting 1 hour.
