Students must pass the written paper.
Where a pass is achieved in the written paper, the
overall mark is the sum of the two components,
weighted as shown above.
Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100%
weighting for the written paper.
Internal Assessment
1 Exercise Folder 15 MARKS
- To be kept by each student and handed in to the lecturer
for marking (about half- way through the semester)
- The folder contains: Solutions to ALL exercises handed out (which should
not be too big)
- The exercises should be drawn from the following topics,
which implies a certain sequence of teaching the syllabus:
- Data gathering techniques
- DFD and ERD
- Process specification (Structured English, Decision Table
and Tree)
- DATA DICTIONARY
- The folder is checked by the lecturer for completeness
- Some exercises and certain aspects of other exercises are
marked in detail
- Students SHOULD NOT KNOW in advance which exercises are marked in detail.
2 Short Revision Tests 5 MARKS
Some short tests (about 10 minutes), focussing
on topics from previous lecture(s), can be
administered in irregular intervals.
3 Technical Report Writing 10 MARKS
The students are to submit a Feasibility Report
for a given problem that is not too complex.
The Report should be professionally presented,
concise and well-structured.
Examination
- Duration : 2 hours STRUCTURE
Section A : Short Answer Questions 40
MARKS
The questions should be taken from topics not covered in Section B and test the
student's understanding of the topic. A maximum of 15 marks could be allocated
to questions requiring definitions or questions of the form "List..."
Section B : Problems on Structured Analysis
Tools
60 MARKS
Between three and five questions of varying
difficulty which test the student's ability to
apply the structured tools to given problems.
The questions should cover a wide range of the
structured tools. At least one question must
be on DATA FLOW DIAGRAMS (CONTEXT DIAGRAM,
OVERVIEW DIAGRAM and optionally one further
level for some processes).
Examination 70%
Students must pass the written paper.
