Description
To give students a theoretical and practical basis
for general chemical laboratory techniques at the
laboratory assistant level.
To train the students to follow procedures that
ensure the safety of the operator and equipment at
all times.
To develop experimental techniques that will enable
students to obtain results within the limits of
precision of the equipment or instrument.
To develop in the student, an awareness of the
industrial applicability of the equipment or
instrument.
To develop in the students, a respect for the equipment, instruments and
facilities they use, and the confidence that comes with competence.

The suggested three tests could cover the following
topics:
Test No 1 Volumetric Methods/pH Chemistry Test No 2 Titration
Chemistry/Solvent Extraction Test No 3 Gravimetric Analysis
One two-hour internal examination paper 40%
Students should attempt ten of the following
suggested experiments with the eight presented
exercises:
No 1 Preparation of Solutions Prepare 0.1M Na2 CO3, 0.1M AgNO3. Standardise
0.1M HC1, using standard 0.1M Na2 CO3. Prepare pH buffers 4.0 and 9.2 from
chemical compounds.
No 2 Titration Curves
Standardise 0.1M NaOH, using standard 0.1M HC1.
Determine the molarity of an unknown
(0.1-0.2M CH3 COOH) solution, using
standard 0.1M NaOH.
No 3 pH/Buffer Chemistry
Calibrate the pH meter, using prepared pH
buffers.
Prepare a range of pH solutions, by diluting a solution of known pH. Determine
the pH of an unknown solution, using pH meter, pH strips and colorimetric
methods. Study the action of buffers, by adding various amounts of acids and
bases to the buffer.

Titration, e.g.
Determination of nitrites, using standard
KmnO4.
No 5 Titration Technique - Precipitation Technique. Determination of chlorides,
using the Volhard Method.
No 6 Titration Technique -
Autotitration - optional depending
on access to equipment. Simple
acid-base titration.
No 7 Solvent Extraction
Separation of acetic acid/turpentine mixture,
using the separating funnel technique.
Pre-concentration technique, i.e. solvent
extraction of heavy metal ion, with an AAS
finish.
No 8 Solvent Extraction - Determination of fat content in peanuts or grain
feedstock.
No 9 Gravimetric Methods
Determination of ignition loss, e.g. iron ore
LOI.
Determination of moisture in feedstock.
No 10 Gravimetric Methods -
Determination of chloride, via a
precipitation method.
No 11 Gravimetric Methods -
Determination of Sulphate via
BaSO4 precipitate
method.
