Description
To teach the advanced features of the C language.

To teach the importance of understanding errors and
their propagation in floating-point arithmetic.

To provide practical experience in the application
of the C language to system programming situations.

To teach principles and techniques for developing
programs of good quality.

One two-hour written paper 70%
Internal assessment (3 items) 30%

Students must pass the written paper.
Where a pass is achieved in the written paper, the
overall mark is the sum of the two components,
weighted as shown above.
Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100%
weighting for the written paper.

Written Examination (70%)

The examination will consist of six questions as
follows:

- Macros and conditional compilation (15%)
- Error propagation (15%)
- System programming techniques (15%)
- Module packaging (15%)
- Structured programming theory (20%)
- Data driven program or function design and
code (20%)

Internal Assessment (30%)

- Short programs to analyse error types, detection,
propagation and reduction. (15%)

- Larger scale program requiring a considerable design and
documentation effort, involving:

- random file access
- use of a screen handling package
- header and object library files (15%)
