Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required for the application of permit to work procedures where multiple energy sources require isolation for safe access to high voltage, low voltage or mechanical apparatus.Permits to workare a formal system used to control high risk activities in power generation facilities. They specify the control measures that will be put in place to minimise risks. Permits ensure that all hazards and precautions have been considered beforeany hazardous workbegins.Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan and prepare for isolation, de-isolation and restoration, perform isolationand perform de-isolation and restoration. Individuals will, in general, work as an operator in a power generation facility. Power generation plant operators are typically trained and authorised to isolate, prepare plant and issue permits to work.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. Note: Workplace practiceThe application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence or training permit to practice in the workplace where work is carried out on gas and electrical installations. Additional conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for multiple energy source isolation
  • 1.1 Work requirements, including permit to work, are identified and confirmed, in accordance with workplace procedures, with appropriate personnel or by site inspection
  • 1.2 Safety issues, Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and industry standards are identified, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Materials, tools, equipment and resources to satisfy job plan and permit to work requirements are requisitioned and inspected for compliance, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Isolation work is planned sequenced and prioritised, in accordance with workplace procedures and permit requirements
  • 1.5 Permit to work and risk assessment are coordinated with other personnel involved in, or affected by isolations, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.6 Personnel participating in work are briefed and roles and responsibilities are confirmed, in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Perform multiple energy sourceisolation
  • 2.1 Multiple energy source to be isolated is correctly identified, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Isolation is performed, in accordance with workplace procedures and permit to work requirements
  • 2.3 Verification of isolation, dissipation and restraint of energy sources is performed, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Isolation is confirmed, in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Perform multiple energy sourcede-isolation and restoration
  • 3.1 Multiple energy source de-isolation and restorations are performed, in accordance with workplace procedures and permit to work requirements
