Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to apply wood and timber product knowledge in the workplace and promote the benefits of wood and timber products to a range of customers and other stakeholders. It involves identifying products and providing accurate information to customers and other stakeholders about those products.The unit applies to Customer Service/Sales Assistant, Sales and Merchandising Team Leader, Timber Advisor. No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Develop knowledge of wood and timber products.
  • 1.1 Identify and evaluate information sources for wood and timber products for reliability, validity and currency in line with organisational policies and procedures.
  • 1.2 Research wood and timber product certification bodies, schemes and their roles.
  • 1.3 Identify properties of wood and timber.
  • 1.4 Identify main features of timber products.
  • 1.5 Analyse differences between imported versus Australian wood and timber products with relevant personnel.
  • 1.6 Maintain currency of wood and timber product knowledge.
2. Relate wood and timber product knowledge to own workplace.
  • 2.1 Prepare to work safely according to workplace work health and safety (WHS) requirements.
  • 2.2 Identify and review workplace wood and timber production process.
  • 2.3 Consult with supervisors and colleagues about current wood and timber product issues.
  • 2.4 Analyse common wood and timber treatment methods, preservatives and exposure hazards.
  • 2.5 Match timber coatings and finishes to a specific use.
3. Promote wood and timber products to stakeholders.
  • 3.1 Promote characteristics of timber to stakeholders according to organisational procedures.
  • 3.2 Respond to stakeholder enquiries about wood and timber products and their respective advantages according to organisational procedures.
  • 3.3 Advise on appropriate timber(s) for specific end uses.
