Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow a musical director and instructions to sing or play simple musical parts in an ensemble situation.The unit applies to those who have little or no musical experience and who need close guidance and supervision. These skills may apply to performing in community workshops and short programs of musical instruction.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to perform simple musical parts
  • 1.1 Prepare a rehearsal plan for own part in ensemble in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.2 Set up equipment and tune instrument as required
  • 1.3 Confirm ensemble conventions with required personnel
  • 1.4 Set instrument or equipment to required volume as directed
  • 1.5 Follow warm up routine as directed by required personnel
2. Perform simple musical parts
  • 2.1 Identify musical structure of overall ensemble repertoire and confirm how own part fits in
  • 2.2 Start and end musical part at the required places, taking cues from required personnel
  • 2.3 Perform musical part at required volume and using correct posture
  • 2.4 Listen to others in the group and confirm own performance of musical part is in time and in tune with ensemble
3. Review own performances
  • 3.1 Evaluate own performance and note areas that could be improved
  • 3.2 Seek feedback on own performance from required personnel and identify strategies to improve
