This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set down music in a notated form, by hand or using computer-based music notation applications.The unit applies to those who are analysing and notating a pre-existing section or piece of music, including emerging composers, arrangers, conductors, performers, musicians, music producers, music editors and publishers. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Select music for analysis and investigate music notation
  • 1.1 Select music style and repertoire for analysis in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.2 Investigate different uses of notated music forms in performance, composition and music production
  • 1.3 Explore music technology applications for notating music
2. Deconstruct music conventions
  • 2.1 Explore notation norms for rhythmic, melodic and harmonic structures and examine conventions of form in chosen musical style
  • 2.2 Identify symbols used to indicate dynamics and expression marks
  • 2.3 Investigate music writing conventions
3. Notate music cells
  • 3.1 Identify notation requirements, required timeframe and final format for notation in consultation with required personnel
  • 3.2 Notate music in required format according to music writing conventions and using technology as required
  • 3.3 Complete all work within agreed timeframe according to work requirements
4. Review effectiveness of music writing
  • 4.1 Seek feedback on skill development from required personnel
  • 4.2 Evaluate own notated music and identify personal strengths and weaknesses
  • 4.3 Determine development areas for future improvement in consultation with required personnel
