Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to store and monitor contained waste. It includes assessing waste types and volume to maximise storage space and maintain containment. It also includes monitoring stored waste to check integrity of containment, manage hazards, risks and non-conformances, maintain quality and prevent contamination, spillage and unauthorised access to the facility.A person who achieves this unit of competency is expected to take responsibility for completing these tasks with a high degree of self-direction.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare to store and monitor contained waste.
- 1.1 Review job schedule to confirm contained waste storage and monitoring requirements and clarify issues with relevant persons.
- 1.2 Review workplace policies and procedures and work health and safety (WHS) requirements for storing and monitoring contained waste and apply to work activities.
- 1.3 Assess waste types and quantities, and duration of required storage.
- 1.4 Locate suitable storage area according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
- 1.5 Ensure signage complies with workplace and regulatory requirements.
- 1.6 Select, check and use personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities.
- 1.7 Identify hazards and risks associated with work activities and implement required controls according to workplace WHS requirements.
2 Store waste.
- 2.1 Check area to confirm it is fit for purpose and meets waste storage requirements.
- 2.2 Store waste, ensuring compatibility of waste types according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
- 2.3 Stack, place or decant waste to maximise storage space.
- 2.4 Conduct regular checks to ensure integrity of containment.
- 2.5 Contain, secure and cover stored waste to maintain waste quality and prevent contamination or spillage.
- 2.6 Place correct and visible signage to identify regulated or prescribed waste according to regulatory requirements.
- 2.7 Record details of stored waste according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
3 Monitor contained waste.
- 3.1 Check area to confirm the absence of contamination and that it is secure from unauthorised access.
- 3.2 Monitor stored waste to check integrity of containment according to workplace requirements.
- 3.3 Use testing equipment to test facility area and waste containment following manufacturer instructions.
- 3.4 Conduct waste stocktake and confirm compliance with workplace and regulatory requirements.
- 3.5 Document monitoring and testing results for contained waste according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
