Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate plant to process waste. It includes identifying waste types, ensuring the absence of non-conforming waste streams and selecting and using suitable processing methods. It also includes following manufacturer instructions to operate processing plant, and monitoring plant gauges, warning devices, inputs and outputs to ensure optimal operation and safety.A person who achieves this unit of competency is expected to take responsibility for completing these tasks with a high degree of self-direction.This unit forms part of the licensing requirements for operating plant and equipment used in waste management. Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare to process waste.
  • 1.1 Review job schedule to identify operational requirements for waste processing and clarify issues with relevant persons.
  • 1.2 Review workplace policies and procedures and work health and safety (WHS) requirements for operating waste processing plant and apply to work tasks.
  • 1.3 Select and organise equipment, materials and personnel required for processing operation according to workplace requirements.
  • 1.4 Select, check and use personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities.
  • 1.5 Identify hazards and risks associated with work activities and implement required controls according to workplace WHS requirements.
  • 1.6 Inspect waste to identify types for processing and confirm the absence of non-conforming waste streams.
  • 1.7 Select processing method and confirm suitability for waste types according to workplace requirements.
2 Conduct pre-operational checks of plant and equipment.
  • 2.1 Conduct pre-start and maintenance checks of plant and associated equipment following manufacturer instructions.
  • 2.2 Test operational equipment to confirm correct functioning following manufacturer instructions.
3 Process waste.
  • 3.1 Advise relevant persons of impending plant operation to ensure safety and readiness for operation.
  • 3.2 Start and operate plant following manufacturer instructions and workplace requirements.
  • 3.3 Monitor gauges and warning devices to ensure optimal and continuous plant operation and identify potential hazards.
  • 3.4 Monitor waste inputs and processed outputs to ensure constant flow and make required adjustments to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • 3.5 Maintain communication with relevant persons to ensure safety during plant operation according to workplace requirements.
  • 3.6 Check and test waste during processing to ascertain stage of completion and further processing requirements.
  • 3.7 Identify faults and/or hazardous situation and respond immediately according to workplace requirements.
4 Finalise waste processing and complete documentation.
  • 4.1 Shut down plant following manufacturer instructions and workplace requirements.
  • 4.2 Clean plant and associated equipment to remove debris and contamination and ensure readiness for future operation according to workplace requirements.
  • 4.3 Complete waste processing documentation according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
