Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to ride a courier/delivery motorcycle while safely carrying loads, in accordance with relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority regulations/permit requirements for riding a motorcycle on public roads. It includes making motorcycle pre-operational checks; systematically, safely and efficiently controlling all functions; and effectively managing hazardous situations. Driving involves the application of routine procedures to pick up and deliver products, documents and materials from and to customers across a variety of operational contexts.Work is generally performed with limited supervision, and with duty of care responsibility for self in achieving the prescribed outcomes.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Ride courier motorcycle
  • 1.1 Motorcycle is started, steered, manoeuvred, positioned and stopped in accordance with traffic regulations, manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • 1.2 Engine power is managed to ensure efficiency and performance and to minimise engine and gear damage
  • 1.3 Driving hazards are identified and/or anticipated, and avoided or controlled through defensive driving
  • 1.4 Motorcycle is parked, shut down and secured in accordance with manufacturer specifications, traffic regulations and workplace procedures
  • 1.5 Motorcycles carrying dangerous goods are driven along designated routes in accordance with current Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code, relevant government regulations and workplace policies and procedures
  • 1.6 Load is checked to confirm accordance with motorcycle load limit
  • 1.7 Load is secured, transported and motorcycle is manoeuvred with due consideration to any required precautions related to load characteristics and/or relevant government regulations for special loads
  • 1.8 Required signs or indicators are fixed to motorcycle
  • 1.9 Personal protective equipment and clothing is identified, worn and adjusted to meet legislative, regulatory and policy requirements
2 Monitor traffic and road conditions
  • 2.1 Most efficient route of travel is taken by monitoring and anticipating traffic flows and conditions, road standards and other factors likely to cause delays or route deviations
  • 2.2 Traffic and road conditions are constantly monitored and acted on to enable safe operation and to ensure no injury to people or damage to property, equipment, loads and facilities
3 Monitor and maintain motorcycle performance
  • 3.1 Motorcycle performance is maintained through pre-operational inspections and motorcycle checks
  • 3.2 Performance and efficiency of motorcycle operation is monitored during use
  • 3.3 Defective or irregular performance or malfunctions are reported to appropriate authority
  • 3.4 Motorcycle records are maintained/updated and information is processed in accordance with workplace procedures
