Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create and present choreography in a variety of dance styles for informal presentations. This involves applying elements of shape, space, time and dynamics to movement and dance. The unit applies to those who are performing the choreography themselves for a dance class or teaching others how to perform the choreography for a non-professional performance. Work is usually undertaken under some supervision, though autonomy and judgement can be expected given the nature of the creative process.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to develop choreographic techniques
  • 1.1 Confirm purpose, and creative and technical requirements of own dance sequence to be choreographed
  • 1.2 Identify components of choreography in existing dance sequences
  • 1.3 Evaluate the artistic, creative and technical procedures of dance pieces by well-known choreographers
  • 1.4 Clarify how the purpose of required dance sequence will impact on the choreographic process
  • 1.5 Select method for documenting dance sequence to be choreographed
2. Create movement material
  • 2.1 Explore ways that dance elements can be organised for different types of dance stimuli and purposes
  • 2.2 Apply structural components of movement, phrases and sequences to dance
  • 2.3 Create short piece that demonstrates creativity in sequencing of movements
  • 2.4 Create phrases using knowledge of phrasing and rhythmic structures
3. Present choreography
  • 3.1 Develop, rehearse and edit dance composition for informal presentation
  • 3.2 Communicate ideas to required personnel using verbal, physical and tactile methods
  • 3.3 Use props, music and costumes during presentation according to creative requirements
  • 3.4 Demonstrate choreographic approaches that move beyond literal or simple narrative
  • 3.5 Share work in progress with required personnel and seek feedback on alignment of choreography to creative and technical requirements
  • 3.6 Incorporate ideas and suggestions into work
  • 3.7 Identify and follow safe dance practices during creative process and presentation
4. Evaluate choreography
  • 4.1 Develop a journal and detail own composition process
  • 4.2 Analyse choreographic structures and processes verbally and in written formats
  • 4.3 Compare work against existing work and assess development of techniques and ideas
  • 4.4 Discuss strengths and weaknesses of dance pieces with required personnel and identify strategies for improving own techniques
