Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct single energy source isolation procedures for permits to work.Apermit to worksystem is a formal method used to control certain types of workthat can be potentially hazardous. Apermit to workspecifies theworkto be completed, the precautions to be taken and the timeframe for completion.Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan and prepare for isolation, de-isolation and restoration, perform isolation and perform de-isolation and restoration. Individuals will, in general, work as an operator in a power generation facility.Power generation plant operators are typically trained and authorised to isolate, prepare plant and issue permits to work.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Note: Workplace proceduresThe application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence or training permit to practice in the workplace where work is carried out on gas and electrical installations. Additional conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for single energy source isolation
  • 1.1 Work requirements, including permits to work, are identified, in accordance with workplace procedures and are confirmed with appropriate personnel or by site inspection
  • 1.2 Safety issues including Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and industry standards are identified, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Materials, tools, equipment and resources are obtained and inspected, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Isolation work is sequenced and prioritised, in accordance with workplace procedures and permit requirements
  • 1.5 Permit to work is coordinated with other personnel involved in, or affected by isolations, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.6 Personnel participating in work are briefed, with roles and responsibilities confirmed, in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Perform single energy sourceisolation
  • 2.1 Single energy source to be isolated, is correctly identified, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Isolation is performed, in accordance with workplace procedures and permit to work requirements
  • 2.3 Isolation, dissipation and restraint of energy sources is verified, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Isolation is confirmed, in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Perform single energy source de-isolation and restoration
