This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research and explore a range of painting materials and processes to develop an individual professional style. It involves researching different painting materials and processes, exploring them in more detail and integrating them into one’s own work.It applies to skilled visual artists who integrate the use of those different materials and processes explored, to realise a body of creative work. They work with a high level of independence seeking mentoring and guidance as required.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Research painting materials and processes
- 1.1 Research physical properties and capabilities of a range of painting materials
- 1.2 Investigate how different materials and painting techniques best combine to achieve different technical effects
2. Select painting materials and processes for exploration
- 2.1 Participate in professional discussions about painting materials and processes
- 2.2 Evaluate creative possibilities of different painting materials and processes for own approach to work
- 2.3 Identify and assess limitations of particular materials and processes
