Description
This qualification reflects the role of individuals working in the entertainment industry who apply theory and creative skills in a range of situations and display initiative and judgement in planning activities. They have significant autonomy in performing complex technical operations and for making a range of business and production management decisions.
It applies to work in staging, broadcasting, scenery and set construction, costumes and makeup, entertainment administration, lighting and sound, performing arts, arts administration, entertainment customer service, entertainment technical operations and live production work environments.
The job roles that relate to this qualification may include Stage Manager, Workshop Supervisor, Production Manager, Props Master, Technical Services Manager, Venue Manager (Theatre and Cinema), Box Office Manager, Operations Manager, Set Designer, Prop Designer, Costume Designer, Lighting Designer, Scenic Artist, Art Director, Set Dresser, Set Decorator, SFX make-up artist, Stylist, and Director.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification considerations
Electrical work
In some States and Territories of Australia a restricted electrical licence is required. Restricted electrical licences allow a person to carry out electrical work incidental to a trade. Incidental work may include fault-finding on equipment or changing like for like equipment by disconnecting and reconnecting the fixed wiring. It does not include any other changes to the fixed wiring.
National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work
The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging and rigging work. Completion of the following units is required for certification at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels.
- CPCCLDG3001 Licence to perform dogging
- CPCCLRG3001 Licence to perform rigging basic level
- CPCCLRG3002 Licence to perform rigging intermediate level
- CPCCLRG4001 Licence to perform rigging advanced level.
National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work
Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering the construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (Australian Safety Compensation Council, May 2007).
Achievement of the unit 'CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry' from the Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package fulfils this requirement.
Users are advised to check with the relevant licensing authority for requirements.

Some individual units of competency may have their own licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements. Users must check individual units of competency for licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements relevant to that unit.

Total number of units = Fourteen (14)Five (5) core units plus
Nine (9) elective units, of which:
- One (1) elective unit must be selected from Group A
- Seven (7) elective units must be selected from the electives listed below, with no more than three (3) elective units from Group C
- One (1) elective unit may be from the remaining electives in Groups A, B and/or D, or any currently endorsed training package qualification or accredited course.
Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the overall integrity of the AQF alignment, not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification, and contribute to a valid industry-supported vocational outcome.
Where relevant, the choice of elective units set out in the packaging rules above can serve to provide the qualification with one of the following specialisations. The rules to achieve a specialisation are detailed at qualification end.

The achievement of a specialisation will be identified on testamurs as follows:

Production Design
- Four (4) Group B electives must be selected and must include CUADES611 Manage design realisation and BSBCRT611 Apply critical thinking for complex problem solving.
Live Production Management
- Four (4) Group B electives must be selected and must include CUAPPM611 Manage pre-production for shows and events and CUAPPM612 Manage construction workshop operations.
Stage Management
- Four (4) Group B electives must be selected and must include CUASMT611 Stage manage rehearsals and CUASMT612 Stage manage performances.

Entry Requirements
Individuals must demonstrate technical production skills in at least one technical area that supports learning at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level 6 or above.
In particular, they must be able to provide evidence of their ability to:
- develop solutions in at least one technical area
- produce a body of work demonstrating technical skills in at least one technical area
- respond effectively to workplace challenges and requirements in line with current industry standards
- apply knowledge of trends and traditions in at least one technical area.
Skills and knowledge may have been acquired through experience or formal study.
