Essential operating conditions that may be present with training and assessment (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) may also be included.
The recreational vehicle may include:
camper or tent trailers
cross-country or an off road all-terrain caravans
expanda or slide out
five-wheelers
full van
pop tops
slide-on campers or campervans.
Pre-operational checks on towing vehicle and recreational vehicle may include:
brakes
fluid levels and topping up
operation of vehicle lights and indicators
tyre pressures
visual inspection.
The towing vehicle may include:
four wheel drive
specialised towing truck or unit
tractor
truck
two wheel drive
van.
Obstacles or hazards may include:
animals and objects on road
oil, rocks, mud and water on road

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit
Evidence of the ability to:
manoeuvre, tow and site multiple and diverse recreational vehicles using different towing vehicles
identify and avoid obstacles and hazards
communicate safety directions to others in the vicinity
identify and calculate weight-to-vehicle towing ratios set by state and territory authorities and manufacturers.
Context of and specific resources for assessment
Assessment must ensure use of:
off road locations where recreational vehicles are towed and sited
maps of sites
a range of towing vehicles
a range of recreational vehicles
current commercial manufacturer instructions
current schedules of weight-to-vehicle towing ratios issued by government regulators.
Method of assessment
A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:
direct observation of the individual preparing for, towing a recreational vehicle and manoeuvring it onto a site
written or oral exercises that allow assessment of the individual’s ability to:
calculate a range of weights
aggregate mass of recreational vehicles
capacities of towing vehicles
use of case studies and problem-solving exercises on obstacles and hazards and methods of solving these
written and oral questioning to assess knowledge of regulated weight-to-vehicle towing ratios
review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of the individual’s on-the-job performance.
