Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to safely use static machines - machines that are fixed to a set location for their operation - to produce shading and security screens safely and efficiently.The unit applies to individuals who follow standard procedures to complete routine tasks using static machines under supervision.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Set up machine
  • 1.1 Identify task requirements from work instructions
  • 1.2 Identify and follow work health and safety requirements
  • 1.3 Check that required attachments and equipment are available, safe and functional
  • 1.4 Select material for machining, and check it meets task quality requirements
  • 1.5 Check that emergency stops, gauges, guards, controls and safety equipment are functional prior to machine start-up
  • 1.6 Complete machine settings and adjust to meet task requirements in compliance with manufacturer instructions
  • 1.7 Carry out pre-start checks on equipment in accordance with workplace practices
2. Operate machine
  • 2.1 Follow workplace procedures and manufacturer guidelines for machine start-up
  • 2.2 Transfer material to machine in accordance with manufacturer instructions, safe handling procedures and workplace practices
  • 2.3 Operate and monitor machine in accordance with its designed capacity and purpose and manufacturer specifications
  • 2.4 Keep machining area clear of dust, off-cuts and debris in accordance with work health and safety requirements
  • 2.5 Identify items that do not meet quality requirements, and recycle or discard in accordance with workplace procedure
  • 2.6 Recognise problems with product or machine operation, and report to appropriate persons in accordance with workplace procedures
3. Maintain and clean up machine
  • 3.1 Follow equipment lock-out procedures before starting maintenance or cleaning
  • 3.2 Perform routine maintenance on machine following manufacturer instructions and workplace guidelines
  • 3.3 Clean work area, safely dispose of rubbish and identify items for recycling and/or reuse in accordance with workplace procedures and environmental standards
  • 3.4 Maintain and store equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace practices
  • 3.5 Identify, tag and report faulty equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
