Description

To provide students with the basic skills and knowledge required to maintain
and operate marine engines, machinery, and systems. The course provides the
theoretical knowledge required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority
(AMSA) for the position of Marine Engineer Watchkeeper on board vessels with a
propulsive power of 750 KW or more, operating in Australian coastal and
international voyages.

Following sea service as required by AMSA the graduates would be employed as
watchkeeping marine engineers on board ship. They would be engaged to perform
any or all of the following tasks:

operate, while in charge of a watch, all marine propulsion, auxiliary
and mechanical services machinery

service and maintain all marine propulsion, auxiliary and mechanical
services machinery

supervise integrated ratings at sea and in port in the operation and
maintenance of machinery, and supervise shore labour in port and in dry-dock in
contract maintenance work

write reports on technical matters in the field of marine engineering
and provide verbal briefings to senior engineers

perform fire prevention management tasks and lead fire fighting parties

apply basic first aid techniques and operate life support systems

operate survival and lifesaving equipment carried on board ships
-
analyse machinery and ship performance using theoretical knowledge
involving mechanics, thermodynamics, electrotechnology and naval architecture.
