Description

The purpose of the Certificate III in Two-Way Aboriginal Liaison is to develop linguistic knowledge about Aboriginal English or Australian creoles and the skills to apply Two-Way communication practices in the context of a variety of work roles. This new qualification at Certificate III level will introduce new approaches to teaching literacy and numeracy to adult Aboriginal people and is designed to break the cycle of disadvantage. The qualification will:
i. Utilise a new pedagogy that more effectively teaches communication and literacy skills in Standard Australian English to speakers of Aboriginal English or an Australian creole by adopting a bidialectal approach;
ii. Give appropriate recognition to the social, cognitive and linguistic practices of Aboriginal people who use Aboriginal English or an Australian creole as their first or ‘home’ language;
iii. Develop the human capital and marketable communication skills of speakers of Aboriginal English and Australian creoles to enable them to take up roles as brokers of linguistic, social and cultural knowledge;
iv. Provide an opportunity for skills development that will enhance Aboriginal enrolment in and completion of higher level vocational qualifications;
v. Provide Standard Australian English speakers with an opportunity to learn about Aboriginal English and Australian creoles to develop the skills to more effectively communicate and work with dialect speakers; and
vi. Provide both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal participants with the skills to use Two-Way communication strategies to enhance understanding between speakers of different varieties of English and/or a speaker of an Australian creole.
